Sunnyvale residents can kick Christmas trees to the curb

Sunnyvale residents who live in a single-family home, duplex, triplex or mobile home can place Christmas trees at the curb for collection through Jan. 24. Multi-family households should check with their property manager or owner to determine where to place trees for collection.

To be eligible for pick-up, trees must be free of all decorations, lights and tree stands and cut into 4-foot lengths or shorter. Flocked trees should be treated as garbage as opposed to yard waste.

The SMaRT Station at 301 Carl Road is also accepting trees for disposal for a $25 fee, $51 for flocked trees. Unusable holiday light strands can be recycled at the SMaRT Station at no charge.

Call for artists

Artists are invited to apply for the 40th annual Hands on the Arts festival through 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 3.

Applicants can choose to lead an art project to rotating groups of children at the festival, set for Saturday, May 3. Artists will receive a $400 stipend and an event T-shirt, and city staff will provide and prep all necessary materials for each project.

Millennial attraction

Sunnyvale was among the top 10 U.S. cities attracting millennials in a recent study, coming in at No. 6, just ahead of Santa Clara. Alexandria, VA took the top spot in the SmartAsset study.

The rankings are based on recent migration data, which reveals that 5.49 million millennials moved to large U.S. cities in just one year in search of affordability, job opportunities and lifestyle perks.
