The name of the woman killed, a Hayward resident, has not yet been released pending notification of her family.
Police also have not released the name of the driver, a 36-year-old man they said is not a Hayward resident.
The collision happened about 7:53 a.m. Monday near the intersection of Tennyson Road and Calaroga Avenue.
Responding officers found the driver and woman still on the scene.
The woman was unresponsive and had sustained major injuries related to the collision, police said. She was transported to a hospital where she was later pronounced dead.
Police said the woman was in a marked crosswalk when she was struck by a Mazda going northbound on Calaroga Avenue.
The driver was detained at the scene. Police did not say if he suffered any physical injuries, but did say he is currently being treated at a hospital and has been placed on a mental health hold. No other details about why he was placed on a mental health hold have been released by police.
Police said investigative steps are being completed to determine whether speeding, alcohol or drugs were factors in the collision.
The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact the police traffic bureau at 510-293-7011.
The woman’s death is Hayward’s second fatal traffic collision of the year.
