The City of Cupertino and Santa Clara County Department of Agriculture and Environmental Management are partnering to reduce fire hazards caused by overgrown vegetation and flammable materials. Property owners must meet Minimum Fire Safety Standards by Wednesday, April 30, and maintain them throughout fire season.

Vegetation must be kept below 6 inches high. County staff will inspect properties from April 30 through the end of October; noncompliant properties will be cleared at the owners’ expense. Fees, including an inspection fee, will be added to the property tax bill for noncompliant properties.

Recycling Day

Cupertino is hosting its Paper Shredding and Environmental Recycling Day at De Anza College, Parking Lot A, on April 26, 8 a.m.-noon.

This event offers residents a free drive-through, drop-off service to encourage the extended use of products and to prevent valuable resources from being sent to the landfill. View acceptable items at cupertino.gov/environmentalday.

Sparking conversation

The City of Cupertino is exploring a policy for transitioning home appliances and equipment from natural gas to renewable electricity to help fight climate change. To that end, the city is asking residents to take a short survey about community perspectives on home electrification.

The survey also touches on challenges residents face in electrifying their homes by using electric appliances and equipment such as induction cooktops, heat pump water heaters, and heat pump air conditioning and heating systems.
