SAN JOSE — A woman died in a single-vehicle collision Saturday night after a car veered off the road, collided with a stump and overturned, the San Jose Police Department said in a press release.

The vehicle’s driver was being held on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter, authorities said.

Around 9:01 p.m. Saturday, police officers responded to a collision near San Tomas Expressway and Moorpark Avenue.

A 2005 beige Nissan sedan had been driving northbound on San Tomas Expressway with an adult male driver and an adult female passenger, police said. The car was traveling at a high rate of speed and the driver lost control.

The car went off the roadway south of Moorpark Avenue and collided with a stump, overturning, authorities added.

The female passenger suffered “catastrophic injuries,” police said. She was pronounced deceased at the scene of the collision.

The adult male driver had life threatening injuries and was taken to a hospital, where he was stabilized, authorities said. Police took the driver into custody and, after his release from the hospital, he will be booked into Santa Clara County Jail on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter.

The crash marks the ninth fatal collision and ninth traffic death of the year.

The name of the deceased passenger will be released by the Santa Clara County Coroner’s Office once her identity is confirmed and her next of kin is notifiec.
