Suspicious device spurs evacuations in Berkeley

BERKELEY – Residents here were allowed to return home Friday after being evacuated due to a suspicious device.

The evacuations happened around 4:30 p.m. in the 1300 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Way, according to the Berkeley Police Department.

In an advisory, police asked people to avoid the area, as well as Berryman Street at Josephine Street to Vine Street and Bonita Avenue at Vine Street to Berryman Street.

Josephine Street and Bonita Avenue were fully blocked off in the area, police said.

Around 5:15 p.m., police announced the 1300 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Way was clear. Roadways in the area were also open again.
