Calicraft Brewing Co. moves Walnut Creek taproom entirely outdoors

Popular Walnut Creek craft brewery Calicraft moved its original taproom into an all-outdoor beer garden called Shadelands Beer Garden, which held its grand re-opening on Thursday.

The 6,500-square foot area, located across the lot from Calicraft’s original location, is centered around a 40-foot shipping container bar and also offers fire pits, more than 50 picnic tables, Adirondack chairs and televisions. It’s pet- and kid-friendly and open to all.

Moving the entire operation outdoors allows for a renovation on the original taproom, which is being converted into a 10,000-square-foot, two-story location that’ll feature a brewery, winery, distillery and restaurant. The renovation won’t be complete until sometime next year.

The opening of the outdoor beer garden is the first of three major projects coming from Calicraft this summer.

Blaine Landberg, of Walnut Creek, pours a beer on opening day of the Calicraft Brewing Co. in the Shadelands Business Park in Walnut Creek, Calif., on Friday, July 29, 2016. It’s the first real retail/entertainment hub in the newly rezoned Shadelands and part of the ever-growing number of craft breweries in the Bay Area. Next up is the opening of a new location in downtown Walnut Creek that will see a rooftop bar open on top of wine bar Va de Vi. The rooftop location will feature 1,500 square feet of space inside and an equally sized space outdoors. Calicraft’s culinary director Jeff Amber, formerly of Fieldwork Brewing, Mixt Salad, and Chow Restaurants, will be serving small plates with an emphasis on California cuisine.

Also coming is a new restaurant, beer garden and distillery located across the UC Davis campus. Calicraft Davis will feature 4,000 square feet indoors with another 4,000 square feet outside. Amber will also curate the menu at this location, with an emphasis on pizza and upscale bar food.

Both locations are expected to open this summer.

Calicraft was first founded in 2012 and last August announced that it acquired Fairfield-based Heretic Brewery and Distillery.
