Woman sexually assaulted on Ohlone Greenway near BART in El Cerrito

EL CERRITO — A woman was sexually assaulted early Sunday on the Ohlone Greenway by a man who initially contacted her at the Del Norte BART Station, police said.

The suspect was still being sought Monday.

Police said the suspect first contacted the woman prior to midnight on Saturday at a bus stop at the station.

Authorities did not release what the man said to the woman. Police Lt. J.T. Wahrlich said Monday the woman did not know the man.

The woman decided to start walking home on the Ohlone Greenway, also known as the BART path, police said. Police said that a short distance away from the station, between Hill and Blake streets, the man abducted and sexually assaulted the woman shortly after 12 a.m. Sunday.

The attack lasted for more than an hour before the man fled on foot.

Police were called and the woman received medical treatment, authorities said.

Police described the suspect as Black, mid-to-late 20s, skinny and close to 6-feet tall. He was wearing a black beanie, black hooded sweatshirt, black sweatpants and a gold chain.

Wahrlich said in his 19-year career he has not seen such an assault on the Ohlone Greenway. He said police are reviewing video surveillance from the area to see if the man had possibly ridden BART or just happened to be in the area.

Anyone who may have seen anything or may have additional information about the assault, including video or pictures, is asked to contact Detective Michael Olivieri at 510-820-3061 or email at molivieri@ci.el-cerrito.ca.us.
